Marina La Torraca is a name that didn’t ring any bells in my head so I had to look her up to find out who she is. And well, shame on me cause she sings in Exit Eden, Highlight Kenosis, Synnoveriem and off course Phantom Elite which she co-founded together with Sander Gommans from After Forever.
Wasteland is the debut album from this Dutch/Brazilian outfit with Marina fulfilling the Brazilian part of the band although she residence currently in Germany. Besides the aforementioned bands, she also does the live vocals for Avantasia and that makes her someone with a whole lot of experience and that can be heard on Wasteland, her voice is clear, powerful and on the right times emotional. The ballad Ashtray is a good example if you want to know when it is the right time to sound emotional.
Phantom Elite operates in the symphonic metal field but you probably already got that. Symphonic metal as a genre holds countless bands nowadays so its difficult for new bands to get attention from fans but something that usually helps a lot to get attention is a great album. And Wasteland is a great album!
Just like Marina’s voice, the whole album has a clear and powerful drive to it and the rhythm section gives Wasteland a big and deep heaviness. Guitar solo’s blend in perfectly and the keys are like a flowing stream that makes sure that Wasteland grab’s your attention from beginning till the end.
I can recommend Wasteland to everyone who likes symphonic metal, my favorite track is the acoustic Serenades of the Netherworld.
