Tristessa, real name Maria Kolokouri, was very active in the Greece black metal scene and contributed with bass, guitars, keyboards en vocals to a number of bands.
Maria was born in 1977 and died in 2014 due to complications from leukemia. She left a husband and a son.
During her too short life she wasn’t always singing, she started with Bass around 1995 with a band called Lloth what became Astarte somewhere around 1997. With Lloth one demo was released and after Maria died Astarte changed it’s name back to Lloth although Lloth already existed again since 2003 without Maria. There were plans for a new album with Lloth around 2013 but that was put on hold after Marie became ill. In 2014 Lloth announced that they would be releasing a new album to commemorate their deceased friend, incorporating a “T” into the new logo in honor of Maria’s memory and legacy.
In her early years Maria played also bass en guitars for Vorphalack under the moniker Lady lilith. With Vorphalack a demo, a split and a full-lenght was recorded.
Maria also did some stuff with Insected (a demo) and Profane Serenity for what the latter is not known what she did there. Rumors are that she played live with the English Sabbath but that can’t be confirmed. As a guest musician she contributed some vocals to Bethor on their track for a Bathory tribute. With Black Winter vocals for a split and a EP and under the moniker Maria Tristessa some guest vocals for Vintergata whom are from Russia by the way.
With Astarte, what can be considered as her main band, 5 full-lenght’s were released as an all female black metal band with another female (Kinthia) on vocals on the first three albums. Maria’s voice can be heard for the first time with Astarte in 2004 as SIRENS is released and later on in 2007 on the album DEMONIZED. The latter also being the swansong from Maria as no more albums are released with her voice although Vintergata released an album in 2016 with her voice on one track called ENTROPY.
Astarte is know for being the first all-female black metal band in history.
